Are Diesel VWs Compatible with Biodiesel
The answer to the question above is yes. In fact VW diesel compatability with
biodiesel fuel is extremely good. The best types of VW vehicles to look at when thinking of a diesel car that will be compatible with
biodiesel fuel as those with a TDI engine such as the Jetta, Jetta Wagon, Golf, New Beetle and the Passat.
Certainly in terms of efficiency and clean emissions the TDI engine is among the best when it is run on biodiesel fuel and they are
often over looked as they do not drive as well as their gasoline counterparts. But the VW 1.9L TDI can officially get between 42-61 mpg in
those with a 5 speed gearbox and between 37-57 mpg in those that have an automatic gearbox.
However a word of warning the newer TDI engines which have a higher injection pressure are less forgiving if you put in poor quality fuel
compared to those cars made in the 1980's. But biodiesel oil is perfectly suited to these engines because it has a lower viscosity to it
than either SVO or WVO (unrefined oils).
In the US VW does not recommend that people use high quantities of biodiesel in their vehicles as damage to your engine or fuel system
through the use of substandard fuels or higher level blends of biodiesel may not be covered under warranty.
So before making any purchase of a VW diesel car that is compatible with biodiesel fuel do some research first.
1. Ask about the vehicles history, usage and any major repairs carried out and how often was it serviced.
2. Ask around - get to know people who already have a VW diesel car into which they put biodiesel and see how they are coping.
3. Why not consider purchasing an older car as they seem more readily adapt to being driven with biodiesel fuel in them. You may need
to make some changes to them such as the fuel filter or having to replace the existing fuel hoses with Viton hoses instead.
But it is not just VW diesel that has compatability with biodiesel fuel there are a number of other car manufacturers who have approved
biodiesel can be used in their diesel vehicles and these are Audi, SEAT and Skoda.
